The two German top-class sailors Marc Aurel Pickel and Ingo Borkowski have been crossing each other’s ways for a long time. The helmsman from Kiel Yacht Club (KYC) and the crew from Sport club Berlin-Gruenau (YCBG) then both became part of the Aerosail team in the early 90ties, and as part of the German crew, they won the Sardinia Cup for offshore sailors off the island of Sardinia in 1994. Then Pickel already switched to the Star, while Borkowski joined the last of the three-handed keel boat crews of Jochen Schuemann, Germany’s most successful sailor.
In 2004, Pickel and Borkowski threw their lots together when Borkowski decided to join Pickel’s Olympic campaign as crew. With a “near miss” qualification for the Athens games, the two sailors have “unfinished business” to do and they are all set on achieving Olympic merits.
