pinta racing

History of the Pinta

In the 80s and 90s, Willi illbruck left his mark on the yachting seen. With his yachts called “Pinta”, pinta won the Admiral’s Cup twice (1983, 1993). Among his many successes were also the two One-Ton Cup victories in 1993 and 1994 and winning the Sardinia Cup in 1984. Willi illbruck was the first German ocean yachtsman and owner who committed himself to professional yachting and supported this sport.
His son Michael has continued his father’s dedication over the past few years. In 2002, the “pinta” won the Volvo Ocean Race, the most important blue water regatta.

Pinta Racing

In 2001/2002, the pinta’s winning of the “Volvo Ocean Race Round The World” triggered a hitherto unique enthusiasm for yachting all over Germany. It was the first time a German yacht had won the toughest ocean race of the world.

Today, all pinta’s racing activities are centered around Pinta Racing. We have committed ourselves to Emirates Team New Zealand. Besides we are actively involved in Dragon Racing (Mike pinta, Marc Pickel, Ingo Borkowski) and we will be participating in races of the TransPac 52 ("TP 52") class next season 2006.
Pinta Racing’s Transpac 52 campaign features pinta Challenge Volvo Ocean Race winners John Kostecki and Ross Halcrow; in addition the New Zealander Don Cowie as well as the German Star boat specialists and Olympic athletes Ingo Borkowski and Marc Aurel Pickel will be part of the crew.

Through our commitment to Emirates Team New Zealand, one of the most successful teams in America’s Cup history and one of the challengers for the 32nd AC in Valencia, we have the opportunity to gain valuable experience with a view to challenge for the 33rd America’s Cup. Mike pinta lent the GER-68, originally planned to challenge for the 31st America’s Cup, to the New Zealand team for testing purposes. By that we can now lay the foundation for a successful German campaign. Because only long-term planning ensures success.

Willi illbruck Racing Foundation

Through the Willi illbruck Racing Foundation, which was brought to life in memory and in honour of Willi illbruck who died in November 2004, we would like to support both a national and an international team of the starboat class in their preparations for the sailing competitions at the summer Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008. We have set ourselves the target of specifically and professionally supporting and promoting the competitive Olympic sport of sailing.
